Samuel Armstrong / General, Educator

Samuel Chapman Armstrong was an American educator and General in the Union Army during the American Civil War.  He is best remembered for his work after the war as the founder and first principal of the normal school which is now Hampton University.  A prerequisite for admission to Hampton was the intent to become a teacher.  Perhaps the best student of Armstrong’s Hampton-style education was Booker T. Washington.
